Neuromuscular Dentistry

Neuromuscular dentistry focuses on keeping the muscles that move the jaw in a comfortable, relaxed position so they do not conflict with the teeth or the jaw joint.  Symptoms of neuromuscular problems include:

  • Headaches and/or facial pain
  • Shoulder, neck, back pain
  • Clicking, popping or pain in jaw joints
  • Clenching or grinding teeth
  • Numbness in arms and fingers
  • Loose, worn, chipped and cracked teeth and/or fillings
  • Sensitive, painful teeth
  • Pain and sensitivity in teeth
  • Ringing or congestion in the ears

To treat neuromuscular problems, we use modern technology to find the position where the jaw muscles are relaxed and at rest. We move the jaw into the right position using a low-frequency T.E.N.S. (Transcutaneous Electrical Neural Stimulation) unit called a Myo-Monitor to relax the muscles. This rhythmic pulsing of this device relaxes the muscles and sets up ideal muscle function by increasing blood flow, flushing out toxins. We often find that after 45 minutes of stimulation, the muscles are in their ideal position.

Peridontal (Gum) Therapy

Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection of your gums that - left untreated - can cause your gums to recede and your teeth to loosen and fall out.  (And there’s nothing attractive about that!)

But researchers have also discovered that periodontal disease has other serious implications for your overall health.  They have linked the bacteria that cause periodontal disease to diabetes, heart disease and even low birth weight babies.

We use laser treatment for gum disease (and for cosmetic gum recontouring, too).  Using a laser beam allows us to precisely target the infected gum tissues, removing them from the tooth’s pocket wall and cleaning the tartar from the tooth’s root surface.  The laser sterilizes the area at the same time, killing any bacteria and leaving the gum pocket disease free.  (That means there’s less chance the periodontal disease will recur.) We then use the laser to seal the area with a dense fibrin clot.

Laser surgery eliminates the need to make incisions, so you don’t need stitches and there’s no bleeding or swelling afterwards. You’ll feel no discomfort and you’ll recover quickly.  In addition, there are fewer side effects, like sensitive teeth. Laser treatments can usually be completed more quickly than surgical treatments, meaning fewer appointments.  Laser therapy is also a safe treatment for people with diabetes or bleeding disorders.
